The total (on- and offline) Fashion, Beauty & Luxury trade is valued at €719 billion and is expected to grow by 2% by 2025. The EU’s (27+UK) online Fashion and Beauty market (including luxury) achieved a turnover of €213 billion in 2023, of which €82 billion was cross-border. This market is projected to reach €224 billion by 2024-25, marking a 5% growth.

This upward trajectory is supported by the strong presence of online Beauty and Luxury pure players, the Chinese newcomers Shein and Temu and the ever-growing “Global C2C Marketplaces,” which offer sustainable second-hand fashion and resale options. Top 500 Cross-Border Fashion, Beauty & Luxury Retailers and Marketplaces

The Top 500 ranking unveils the pivotal global players operating across borders in 30 countries (EU27+UK+CH+NO) through online platforms, predominantly B2C and C2C sellers. Key players in the cross-border Fashion, Beauty & Luxury sector include Amazon, Zalando, TEMU, Shein, Ssense, Sinsay, eBay, AliExpress, Vinted, Notino, The Ordinary, Cerave, Oriflame and E.L.F Beauty.

Amazon: Cross-Border Fashion, Beauty & Luxury Leader (eRank TOP 1)

Despite facing fierce competition from Shein and Temu, Amazon remains the world’s largest online retailer and marketplace as of 2023. For the second consecutive year, Amazon Fashion & Beauty has made significant strides in cross-border expansion, leveraging its robust platform to appeal to a broader range of consumers.

As Shein and Temu expand their global footprint, their ability to navigate the complexities of a globalised marketplace will be critical. Amazon’s recent foray into the discount shopping segment, mirroring the models of Temu and Shein, underscores a strategic pivot towards leveraging China’s manufacturing capabilities. This move aims to enhance product affordability and selection, directly competing with established players in the budget e-commerce space. The challenge for Amazon lies not only in penetrating this fiercely contested market but also in convincing consumers to transition from established platforms. This shift necessitates competitive pricing, expansive product offerings and trust-building measures in a competitive landscape shaped by Temu and Shein’s established market presence.

Recently, Amazon launched its Luxury Stores in the US in collaboration with Oscar de la Renta. Under the direction of Sally Singer, Amazon Fashion has achieved significant cross-border success in the luxury sector, focusing on ‘quiet luxury’—a trend characterised by minimalist designs and high-quality materials. This initiative has now expanded into Europe, allowing shoppers to access ready-to-wear collections from both established and emerging luxury fashion and beauty brands.

TOP 10 Rankings

Fashion: Amazon, AliExpress, TEMU, eBay, Etsy, Shein, Zalando, Trenyol, Vinted and Cider.

Beauty: Notino, The Ordinary, Fragrantica.com, Cerave, Makeup, Oriflame, E.L.F Cosmetics, Allbeauty, Avon and Byrdie.

An intriguing discovery is the omnipresence of players like Skims (by Kim Kardashian), Beyoncé, Marc Jacobs, Rare Beauty and Fenty Beauty (by Rihanna). They represent the Top 10 Manufacturers-Designer/Stars/Influencers Luxury category: Skims, Beyoncé, Rare Beauty, Marc Jacobs, Armani, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dior and Fenty Beauty.

Brand and Marketplaces E-commerce Strategies and Challenges

  • 4 (Ultra) Fast Fashion Waves

In the dynamic realm of global retail, the fast fashion industry is undergoing rapid transformation. Technological advancements, shifting consumer preferences and evolving regulatory environments are pivotal forces reshaping its future trajectory. At the forefront of this evolution are ultra-fast fashion e-tailers Temu and Shein, poised to wield significant influence in the global market. Their prowess in innovation, adaptability to market challenges and strategic decision-making will define their enduring impact.

  • Fashion & Beauty and the Importance of Social Commerce

The retail landscape, particularly within the Fashion & Beauty industries, has been transformed by the advent of social commerce and the strategic use of celebrity endorsements. This hybrid selling model leverages social media platforms not just as marketing tools but also as direct sales channels, creating an engaging and transactional experience for consumers.

As fashion is the leading vertical of the online cross-border retail market, I am grateful to our market research team for this third edition of the ‘TOP 500 Fashion, Beauty and Luxury Retail Europe’ report. It makes online fashion, beauty and luxury operating in Europe more transparent and stimulates cross-border trade for this entire sector,” concludes Carine Moitier, Founder of CBCommerce.EU.
